| - Seriously??? That's what we got for that high of a bill??? Read on...
Full Disclosure: I know cows, meat, and steaks. I grew up on a farm raising cattle with my family. We harvested the stock and slaughtered the meat for the family restaurant. I've eaten a lot of "excellent" and "bad" meat in my time. I've also been to many steak houses in multiple cities. Finally, I'm not opposed to paying stupid prices if I'm getting an exceptional meal, service, or experience. The "bar" was (and should be) set very high for this establishment based on its cost, reputation, and competition.
Cost: Prepare to PAY, a lot!!!! AND....IT'S NOT WORTH IT!!!!! Minimum starting pricing for an 8 oz. steak is in the $24-$25 area. My 12 oz. prime rib was $32.50 (including a starch, veggies, and soup or salad). Lowest priced bottle of wine (Red only) is in the $24 range and can sky rocket to $2,000 if you desire. AGAIN, YOU ARE GOING TO PAY A LOT FOR THIS MEAL!!!
Food: The prime rib was AVERAGE at best!!! I could not have been more surprised or disappointed in the meal. Anyone who knows meat (even just a little bit about meat) could have cooked this meal better than the chef. The meat was tough, over cooked for how I ordered it, and seriously lacking flavor.
Service: The service was just "OK". The wait team took care of us but weren't very quick and missed a few requests that were promptly corrected.
Wine: The only bright spot is a HUGE wine selection that had a reasonably low price point for entry with a "Wow" factor at the higher end. You won't be disappointed in the available selection.
Restaurant/Setting: Parking is available via valet or a parking lot next to the restaurant. Either one will cost you $3.00. Apparently it is "cool" to walk through the kitchen before and after meals to the valet parking. Based on my experience and expectations of this location, this is an over rated 'thrill". In fact, it's a pretty bad business practice in terms of liability for the restaurant. The location has a old style, 1950's feel to it (not the good kind of Americana feeling but the creepy 1970's "I'm in my odd uncles basement' kind of feeling. It's a dated location that should be improved. It's really not all that people seem to think it is for the nostalgia, high end clientele, etc. Seriously, any steak restaurant in Boston, New York, or Chicago would bury this place.
Overall, save your money. If you think you are going to impress anyone (or need to actually impress someone) by spending a ton of cash for the "Durant's" name then feel free to blow your money (or just give them the cash instead as it will be put to better use). Go have a good night out is Scottsdale, the Biltmore area, or Arcadia. You'll spend less on dinner and have some left over for a cocktail to cap the night.
NO, NO, NO, NO, NO....Not for a prom date, not for a proposal, not for your boss, and not even the wife or hubby. Go somewhere else for better food and a less guilty feeling at the end of the night as you avoid spending your hard earned cash for no reason.
