  • I finally managed to try the oldest Thai restaurant in the Sahara Commercial Center. It didn't live up to its standards. Komol is one of three Thai restaurants within a hop, skip, and a jump of each other, and it's almost certainly been around since before I was born. It's also the last of the three-headed beast of beloved, dare-I-say hyped Thai restaurants that I had to try. So I stopped in to try a lunch special today. It does seem like the decor could be from an older time, but it's still clean and has friendly waitstaff. It's fairly brightly lit and the atmosphere was relatively quiet when I dined in. I chose the panang curry lunch special ($7.95) with beef, owing to recommendations from Yelp friends and the server's answer to my inquiry on which dishes were the most popular. They first brought out an egg roll w/ sweet & sour sauce and horseradish, and my choice of side in the egg drop soup. Both were good but not particularly impressive, and I found myself having to add salt to the soup. The curry came out, and it was oddly... not high in temperature. Mostly warm, to be sure, but I usually expect it to be painful to the touch, you know? This was perhaps an ominous sign. The curry was pretty good, but it wasn't as impressive in flavor as others that I've had, and I was surprised that the "mild" level of spiciness was a 1 or maybe 1.5 at best. I will say that the meat portion was very generous, although it was a fairly generic cut of beef. The veggies were fine but not spectacular and not as abundant as you'd expect from a place that specializes in vegetarian cuisine. My biggest gripe at mealtime was that the rice had a few grains that were hard (read: tough to chew, as opposed to uncooked). The problem that I had later that afternoon was stomach pain. I didn't have an issue that required me to visit a restroom, but I'd give it a 3 or 4 out of 10, if 10 is the most tortured my intestines have ever been. I'm sure this was caused by Komol because it was my first meal in 16 hours, and that whole temperature issue was a tip-off. I may give Komol another chance, but I'm not sure why I should be so generous with so many other great Thai restaurants in town, some of which are just a short stroll away.. My intestinal fortitude is the only reason that I haven't dropped the rating further, and if I'd had to drag myself to the toilet... you know the punchline.
