This was possibly the worst experience I have ever had as a parent. I called VLK and asked about youth programs and was encouraged to start my son in their weekend clinic. He was so excited from the moment he walked in the door and the enthusiasm continued to build as he got fitted for helmet, suit, and heard the safety briefing. Off to the track where he was the slowest one there but cut his time in half by the second lap. He finished dead last but could not be happier with how fun it was and how brave he had been to try this. We went to have a snack and wait til the next round. The woman who ran the clinic came up to both of us and told me AND my 8 year old that he was too slow, didn't have enough driving experience, and could not participate as it was dangerous to other drivers. The tears immediately welled up his eyes as his emotional high was taken to a new low. No offers to get him practice that day, pair him with newer drivers, or any plan other than give us our money back and send us home. My son was shattered and to hear this from a stranger made it even worse (why not pull me aside and make this a conversation so I could determine how to communicate to son?). I couldn't understand how a 'no experience necessary' clinic can cut a child from the program for "lack of driving experience". I didn't know there were many 8 year olds that had driving experience - where does one get driving experience at 8??!!?! I was sick to my stomach for what this experience did to his confidence as a child. I called later that day to speak to the manager, after waiting on hold for several minutes I was disconnected. When I called back I was told he was busy. I can't even begin to understand how this behavior is justified. I would never take any child there nor would I plan a corporate event at a place that behaves this way.
