  • Now that the renovation has officially "launched" -- even though some of the new stores haven't opened yet -- I think it's fair game to review Markville. Overall, I'm very impressed with the changes, The $111 million that was put into sprucing up the mall (new food court, flooring, railings, staircases, etc.) has really worked wonders on a mall that was upscale-ish in the 80s but that had grown tired over the years. The number and quality of new stores is a huge change over the offerings from five years ago. The Apple Store in particular is great, and most of the existing tenants have also moved to nicer digs. The food court is pretty great, too. It's no Yorkdale, but Markville is now miles ahead of Scarborough Town Centre in terms of the quality of its offerings and at least at Fairview's level. Fairview has a few stores that Markville doesn't, but Markville has, or will have shortly, among others, Banana Republic, Coach, Fossil, JOEY, Loft, Michael Kors, and Victoria's Secret. Personally, I would put it ahead of Fairview now. There, I said it, this is now the best mall east of Yonge Street (I won't really count Bayview Village since that's too small and posh for pretty much everyone). Some may complain that it doesn't have any cinemas, but to me that has little to do with what a mall needs to be these days (Markham is getting two new multi-plexes anyway).
