| - We paid $160 per head (no discount for kids) for the Hoover Dam Upgrade Top to Bottom tour which seemed pretty expensive since you can go and see Hoover Dam for much cheaper on your own (free to see it, $15 for the power plant tour). On this tour we saw the dam from BELOW, floating on the Colorado River, which you can not do if you drive to the dam yourself.
I had visited Hoover Dam in 2000 but didn't see or learn as much as I did on this visit. It was nice to go with someone who knows the area and how the dam thing works. This is what you are paying for:
1. TOUR GUIDE. Kegan was our knowledgeable tour guide/driver. He was a former cab driver and was born and raised in Las Vegas. He told us all kinds of useful information about Las Vegas, the strip, downtown, Boulder City, and Boulder Dam (Hoover Dam). It was nice to not have to GPS everything and just leave the logistics up to Kegan. He picked us up at 8:30am from our Las Vegas strip hotel and returned us at 2:30pm.
2. PINK JEEP. Well, ours wasn't a real Jeep. It was a fully air conditioned 9 passenger fancy PINK ADVENTURE TREKKER, made specifically for Pink Jeep tours from Chrysler. This SUV type vehicle has no passenger doors on the side, you enter from the rear. Nice captain seats for everyone and panoramic windows all around made this an enjoyable ride. Watch your head as you walk in the vehicle, even if you are short. Watch your head when you sit into your seat. I managed to konk my head when I was about to sit in my seat.
3. Complimentary water. It's hot out there and it was nice to have a cooler with fresh water each time we jumped on the Pink Jeep. We also got a small snack pack which had CheezIts, a cookie, and fruit snacks.
4. SEE HOOVER DAM FROM BELOW! Only 2% of all visitors to Hoover Dam get to see the Dam from below! Pink Jeep has partnered with Black Canyon River Adventure tours to do the 20 minute pontoon float around the base of the dam on the Colorado River. This was just awesome!
5. SEE HOOVER DAM FROM ABOVE! I even got to go to the Tillman bridge to take pictures of the dam from above. It's about a 70 step hike up to the bridge.
6. SEE HOOVER DAM FROM THE DAM! Did you know there are restrooms in the gold doors on the dam? We walked across the dam from the Arizona side to the Nevada side, stopping to use the restrooms located right there on the dam.
7. SPILLWAYS. I know I missed this the last time we came here on our own. These tunnels are large enough to float a WW2 battleship in it. That is one big water slide, and it's only been used once in 1983 when Lake Mead was full.
8. POWER PLANT 30 min TOUR - $15 if you pay on your own (which you can do online prior to arrival or pay at time of visit). Great 30 min tour down the elevator to the power plant). It is kind of freaky to see the water seeping through the rocks when your are under the dam. I don't know why this was cool but it was. This was the tour I would have done if we went on our own because children under 8 are not allowed on the HOOVER DAM 1hr TOUR. (probably because it would be extremely boring for them and there are no restrooms)
We had a great experience with Pink Jeep Tours, highly recommend if you want to see Hoover Dam. If you are short on time, then you may want to do Hoover Dam on your own, since we were gone for 6 hours door to door.
