| - (A review of the Cafeteria) If this is hospital food, I want to be sick more often. Thankfully I work here, but not in the cafeteria. Located in the basement, this gem of a little restaurant is one of the greatest perks of working here.
When I was a child, my grandfather was in the hospital up in bloomington, when we went to visit, we ate in their cafeteria. It was bleak, it was sterile feeling, it was just not welcoming. How many different shades of jello can there be?
This is not how the Carle Cafeteria operates. This place is really darn good. With daily specials, including hand-tossed salads; this place has everything you could probably want.
Today's special was either the chicken or cheese enchiladas or the bourbon pork loin. Being the drunkard that I am, I went with the pork loin. Pork loin is easy to overcook, especially if done in the quantities that this place produces daily. Today it was tender and juicy. It cut easily with the plastic fork and knife. The bourbon glaze had a nice oaky flavor, with just enough sweetness to cut through what could be an overpowering bourbon flavor. I had it served with a side of mashed potatoes and a side of corn.
In addition to the daily specials, there is also the ala carte line, where you can get your burgers, hot dogs, chicken breast patties, pork tenderloin sandwiches... and fries. Also, there is a daily sandwich special. If I have the special sandwich, I prefer it on a regular bun, as the pretzel roll they serve it on just isn't the bread option for me.
During the week there is a special soup and each day a different soup. Chili for the week, and today's special was Tomato Florentine. If they have cream of mushroom soup, you need to try it. It is possibly the best cream of mushroom soup I've ever had. It's not from a can (or if it is, they doctor (no pun intended) it up so much that you wouldn't recognize it). It has some of the largest pieces of mushroom that I've ever seen in a soup. It's amazingly delicious. It looks as though they use at least 3 different types of mushrooms in the soup. On Friday's you must try the clam chowder. "Clam chowder from a hospital???" you may say; yes, this stuff is amazeballs. Some clam chowders are basically potato soup with some bits of clam from a can of minced clams... This isn't that. The clam pieces in this are so large that you will feel you should name them. This piece is Paul, this piece is John... the clams are so large you can still tell they had a personality, and aren't just tiny bits of "meat".
Breakfast is also great here. With made to order eggs as an option, or an omelet specially prepared for you, you won't be disappointed. The biscuits are made from scratch, and the gravy is acceptable. On Wednesday and Friday mornings there is breakfast caserole. Some days are better than others (sometimes it seems like egg, cheese, onion and GREEN PEPPERS!!!) but others are more balanced and flavorful.
With new 24 hours availability it's not really a bad place to eat. The prices are reasonable, and the staff is friendly. I'm not saying stop here after a night out drinking... but, if you have to visit a relative, there are worse places you could eat at and waste time.
