| - Ended our Sunday evening by stopping into The Cotton Room for a nightcap. I ordered the Georgia Girlfriend and my girlfriend went with Popstar.
Quality
The menu at The Cotton Room had about sixteen featured cocktails. At first look none of them really spoke to me, but eventually I settled on Georgia Girlfriend. It combined silver tequila with triple sec, grilled peaches, lime juice, brown sugar syrup, and smoked chili bitters. I had an idea in my head what it would taste like, but that is definitely not what I got. It was too bogged down in the triple sec, which overwhelmed the whole drink. I still enjoyed it more than the Popstar however, but I had little expectation of enjoying this one. With gin, simple syrup, egg whites, lemon juice, sparkling water, and cotton candy pop rocks, it was not a combination I was excited for. And while not as sweet as I expected with cotton candy pop rocks incorporated, it just was not what I look for in my drinks.
Quantity
I have no complaints about the size or the strength of the cocktails.
Value
Both of the cocktails we ordered were $12, but selections on the list ranged from around $10 to $15. Decent prices even though I did not necessarily love our selections,
Ambiance
The Cotton Room is found in the Uptown area of Charlotte within the Latta Arcade. Up a nondescript wooden staircase, it sits on the second floor of this historic area. The bar itself is very small and in the evening it was extremely dark. The bar is directly across from the entrance and has about eight stools. Along the opposite wall are a few small tables and then they have some couches and chairs in a lounge area towards the back. Since they were showing a game they had a screen pulled down along the wall where I believe windows usually shine in some light. In the background they were playing a solid mix of alternative rock music. And while I'm sure on quiet nights it is a great place to enjoy a drink, on this busy evening I felt like it was just too cramped.
Crowd
The bar was showing playoff basketball on a large screen, which seemed to draw in a good crowd. We grabbed the last seats at the packed bar and watched as several others came and left because of the lack of room. It appeared like most, if not all, of the patrons knew the bartenders who were working this evening.
Service
I appreciated the self-deprecating humor of the guy behind the bar. Despite his friends constantly teasing him, he kept a good spirit and could dish it right back. For craft cocktail bars a solid bartender can make a big difference and his attitude and presence was definitely the life of the bar.
Parking
The bar is part of the Latta Arcade area, which has street parking as well as some garages nearby. However, I will warn the area was heavily policed and full of intoxicated pedestrians, so I would avoid driving if you plan on imbibing.
Extra
The Cotton Room is a decent cocktail bar. And while I like the energy and personalities of the folks behind the bar, the space was not great and I did not love either of my drinks. They do get points for solid beer and wine options, which I likely would have dug into if I had hung out longer.
