| - Maybe I'd like Smoky Jon's more if I liked ribs? I'm clearly in the minority, but after three visits I just haven't found anything to wow me. I will say the original sauce is great - I love a peppery BBQ sauce and I'd be happy to put it on most things. The barbecue itself, though, just isn't for me.
The first time I tried Smoky Jon's, I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich for takeout. I had fallen in love with smoked turkey while living in Texas and was super excited to find it on the menu. What I got was deli-thin meat drowning in sauce. I couldn't detect any smokiness in the meat itself, and I honestly wasn't convinced that it was smoked in house.
Next time I tried the brisket, and was served similarly thinly-sliced meat. It was on the leaner side, which I preferred, but for my view a slice of brisket shouldn't be much thinner than a quarter of an inch. There should also be some gradation in the color of the meat; mine was pretty gray/brown. Maybe it was just an off day, but I haven't been motivated to try the brisket again.
The best of the bunch was my most recent visit where I got the chopped pork sandwich. The flavor was decent and I could at least find some bits of delicious pink smokiness. The chop was very fine, though, and it looks like it's served up with an ice cream scoop. When I'm craving barbecue, I want a hunk of meat. I haven't been able to find that at Smoky Jon's, and if it's not their style, that's fine. I'm obviously in the minority.
The final push into shrugs for the place came with the last visit. We got takeout, and my boyfriend's combo dinner was missing the ribs. He contacted the restaurant and was told to look for a gift certificate in the mail - they wouldn't issue a refund. We finally got one, but it was literally for just the ribs. Since we've been underwhelmed over the course of our visits it's not really enough to bring us back in. My BF was put off enough by the hassle of not being given half his dinner, having to call, and then wait for weeks to get the certificate in the mail to not want to spend any more money.
I'm glad so many folks love them and that Smoky Jon likely brought (or at least amplified) BBQ to the Madison food scene, but I think I'll stick to other options in the future.
