Cute place, fresh decor, beautiful display of pastries. Ever since I saw pics of the macaron hearts for Valentines day made here, I always wanted to check them out. I had a pistachio macaron and a vanilla canele.
higher priced than other places.
Pistachio macaron had a tastey filling but the cookie itself - which is the most important part - was not airy and light at all, nor chewy, it was soft. Not much lift. It did not have the right texture. I have had a few before from other places and my bf has had some straight from France himself. I have also made some. This scores pretty low for a macaron Sorry.
The canele I have had a few times around the city. I love them so much I try them everywhere I can find them.
The canele at Butter Ave sorry to say scores low as well. Soft again. No crunchy chewy outer, just soft and dark. The inside was so soft it was like eating a portugese tart, not cooked to texture.
When asked if the caneles were made from copper molds or a different mold, the lady behind the counter said, " yes, I think so..." Think. Ok so the are made off site. This can explain a lot.
I went over to the counter to get a napkin.
They only had white paper towels. Those rough things you use in the public washrooms to dry your hands.
For the price and decor you would think they would put a bit more effort in attention to detail and quality.
I was left thinking thats a good 7$ that I wasted on bad quality pastries and a waste of added sugar poundages.
