  • We moved to Las Vegas to escape a cold damp climate that was affecting our senior Maltese, Sophia's chronic arthritis. The groomer that she was seeing insisted that she have her grooming done at the vet because of how fragile she had become. The groomer at Parkway Springs had been doing a lovely job and we were very much away of Sophia's failing health. This past Thursday, Sophia went in for her grooming. We were called as usual to come and pick her up. When I paid the fee, It was significantly higher than usual so I asked to see the invoice. The receptionist was reluctant to give it to me, was fumbling with a stapler and just seemed nervous. When she handed over the invoice I noticed the charge for a "yearly exam/consultation". Okay, no sweat. I asked the receptionist how the exam went and what Dr. Jones found that required a consult. Her answer was "I don't know". I then asked her to review the chart for me so she could answer my question. She opened the chart in front of me, stared at it for a few seconds, and then said "I don't know. I can't read his writing." And then closed the chart. Okay. I want to see Dr. Jones then. Her response was "So you want me to put you in a room so you can see him?" Yes. I just paid $45 for an exam and consult, I want my exam and consult. (I didn't really care about the $45 dollars, but her flippant attitude was agitating to me.) She puts me in the room and then asks "Do you want me to get Sophia now or wait until the end?" I requested she bring her in now, so doctor and I could speak with her present incase he needed to review anything physically with her. A few moments later, this receptionist brought Sophia to me wrapped in a towel. The receptionist was trying to get me to take Sophia IN the towel rather than just take her without it. It wasn't my towel, Sophia doesn't like to be wrapped in anything and it all was somewhat bizarre. Then I realized why. Sophia was paralyzed from the waist down. Even though my husband and I were very much aware that this was more of a probability than a possibility someday, it was shocking because I had no warning. I opened the exam room door and asked the tech that happened to be right outside, why my dog couldn't walk. Her response was to scrunch up her face at me and ask incredulously "you're dog can't walk?" I addressed her rudely and abruptly so she turned to the receptionist that was handling our appointment. The one that took her from the crate, wrapped her in a towel, and handed her to me. That receptionist's response was not directed to me, but to the tech. She shrugged and said "I don't know. She was in the crate." And turned away. When Dr. Jones came in, he clearly had no idea she was paralyzed because he took her from me and tried to stand her up. She fell on her face. Dr. Jones then stated "I did look at her because the groomer said her head is down but I just figured that's how she is and I just picked her up like this, I didn't realize ...I just figured she came in like this." and then he was fumbling for words. My husband arrived by this time and we asked for X-rays taken so we could move forward with treatment. The experience was rapidly declining in spite of it being so horrific to begin with. We never saw the X-rays that day. The facts are this: These people are unprofessional, uneducated, uncaring, and everything that is wrong in modern medicine today. They treated my little girl like a used car and our family like an inconvenience. Such an unnecessarily horrific experience. May that receptionist, vet tech, and Dr. Jones be cosmically compensated for their level of service. Sophia Loren Hudson May passed away on Friday March 2nd in the arms of myself, her father, and the great Dr. Snead of Valle Verde Animal Hospital. Please see my review of our experience at Valle Verde for the comforting ending of this tragic story.
