  • I have frequented Dominican hair salons for the past 10 years since I was in college in Washington, DC and have been to salons in my hometown of Philly and in NYC. Never in these 10 years have I paid $80 to have my hair wash and set to a straight style! Yesterday, after a weekend in sunny LA my hair was in need of a good blowdry. After searching yelp and further researching KG Beauty Salon I decided that coupled with Ms. Katherine Graciano's many years experience and clientele list, this would be my best bet. I called the salon at about 10:30am and asked the receptionist the cost of a wash and set. I was told starting at $35 depending on length of hair. Great that's what I'm accustomed to! She also tells me that walk ins are welcome. I arrive 15 minutes later and tell the receptionist I'd like a wash and set. She tells me no one is there to accept walk ins until later. I'm the told she'll be in by 11:30. Fine, I have no problem waiting 45 minutes. I was the only client in the salon besides a man that was getting his hair braided. Fast forward my stylist comes in and the receptionist tells her what I'm having done. She greets me and starts on my hair immediately. I have curly thick hair in its natural state, hitting slightly past my shoulders. My hair was not combed or paddle brushed before washing. The wash itself was quick and had I not washed it the day before it would still feel dirty. The receptionist came to me and asked if I wanted I deep conditioner to which I declined. Conditioner was put in my hair sparingly. It was not massaged from root to scalp, but instead combed through with a rat tail comb. Let me remind u I have curly thick hair but it is soft and manageable when the right tools are used. After rinsing the conditioner with hot water (I always thought cold should be used) my hair was set on large rollers and I sat under the dryer for about an hour. My stylist brought over cafe during this time! Now comes the part I hate, the scalding hot blowdry. I asked her not to use a lot of heat and with a few exceptions of the dryer being to hot on my scalp she definitely made sure I was comfortable. She started to curl my hair with the round brush and I said no just straight please. She blew it straight with the round brush and I told her that was perfect. Again they offered me tea or cafe. But I chose a glass of water. When she was almost finished blow drying my hair she asked if I liked it. I told her it's looking beautiful. She then gets a flat iron and runs it through my hair! It took all of minutes but I would never put that much heat on my hair. High heat blowdry and flat iron no way! Now the call to the owner to see how much to charge for the services rendered.. They were speaking in Spanish but clearly I could understand them and the stylist told the owner my hair was long and coarse, no deep conditioner, set, blowdry, flat iron. At the reception desk she tells me $80. I was baffled, confused. I said how I thought it started at $35 depending on length of hair. My hair is not long. I asked her to please take a picture of my hair and send it to the owner. She called the owner who I was able to speak with. She informed me that I was being charged $55 because my hair is long and coarse. Plus $25 for using the flat iron. Please understand that I have no issues with paying $80 for hair, but with that I have gotten a deep conditioner and trim and it wasn't at a Dominican salon. The owner said she would take $10 off. I have been going to Dominican salons since a wash and set was $15 and I've seen prices increase but I have never paid more than $50 including tip. While I was pleased with the outcome of hair, the environment, level of hair care, and service does not justify the price I paid. I would have chosen a more upscale salon located in a hotel , not a strip mall. I think that there should be a price list at the reception area or on their website. If no price list, then give a consultation before starting to discuss hair type, services recommended to achieve the style wanted, and finally a price quote, before any service begins.
