  • What a way to begin a weekend in Las Vegas. I've been craving great sushi (and lots of it) so man, did Goyemon hit the spot even better than I was expecting after such rave reviews from local friends. We arrived shortly after opening last Friday (between 11:45am and noon) and were able to get a table for our group of 5. It filled up quickly after that while we were eating. Our drink orders were quickly taken and we started sizing up the AYCE menu. Here's where I kinda take issue: Usually at AYCE sushi, the table is given a paper where we mark off the items we want with tallymarks for different rounds as we decide what we want, and then we order a second round once we've received our items from the first. Here, the waitstaff takes orders like a traditional sushi restaurant. I don't like this for 3 reasons: I ordered plain edamame and miso soup, which I like to start the meal with (both). I got these items at the very end of my meal, when I kind of didn't even want them anymore. I even had to ask our waitress where the edamame was and she just said it was on the way. We were already on the second bottle of sake. My second problem with the waitstaff ordering method rather than the paper with the tallymarks is that there were things people wanted to share, and it was really hard to keep track of how many of each thing were wanted - the waitress implied she had a system but looking over her shoulder at her notepad, I didn't see anything that made sense. We happily ate everything, but I would be mildly annoyed if we were missing orders of nigiri or given too many of something, especially something that we only wanted a small taste of (like say, uni). My third problem with this style of ordering is making sure we received everything and confirming what things are since I like to be adventurous. We had ordered some squid and the folks who wanted it tried what they were thinking was squid. Then something that was much more obviously the squid came out. What had they eaten earlier? The world may never know. But with a form left at the table, we could have figured that out somehow. Ok! Back to positives. The quality of the food was fantastic. I got a shrimp head in my miso that added to the flavor and gave it such umami, I was in heaven. The fish was so fresh and there was a really nice fish to rice ratio on the nigiri (mostly what we ordered). I hate when places go crazy with the rice for AYCE so you fill up. This place made the pieces like usual so you could really enjoy the fish. Here's the nigiri we ordered (and my comments if I ate it): tuna (maguro): delicious and fresh garlic tuna: tasty but the garlic sauce didn't really add too much, so I'd skip it for plain super white tuna: OH MY GOD GET THIS IT'S PHENOMENAL yellowtail (hamachi): another great fresh fish here, refreshing and tasty salmon (sake): my favorite, an old standby and Goyemon did not disappoint seared salmon: a new favorite, the searing adds a beautiful dimension and meatiness snow crab meat: meh, it was good but I keep trying crab and keep not loving it as much as other seafoods so I should stop trying fresh water eel: GET IN MY MOUTH so meaty and the sauce is so sweet and perfect A couple rolls were ordered by the table - I tried a bit of the Ecstasy roll and it was good but I wasn't expecting the "orgasm sauce" to have a kick to it, and I'm not a fan of spicy sauce. We also got the yellowtail collar that's not included in the AYCE and is hot and eaten with a garlicky sauce and OMG. Without the sauce it's really bland and dry but the sauce brings out a flavor profile that's orgasmic. It's umami and savory and melt in your mouth, the seafood dreams are made of. I just wanted more of it than the small flakes we could pull out with our chopsticks. The service, besides the weird ordering and waiting forever for a couple of things, was attentive and polite, my diet coke was regularly refreshed and it was never hard to flag someone down with a question. Overall, I loved this place despite the weird timing. I will 10000% be back the next time I'm in Vegas and like every time after, I'll just make sure I request that I get my miso and edamame before any of the fish I order.
