  • I stopped by here earlier today with my wife and her parents for an after dinner snack. My wife loves Shave Ice and we get it every chance we can whenever we visit Hawaii so this was a natural place to stop. The inside of Frozen Monkey tried to give you a tropical feel with a large neon palm tree and then some monkeys on the counter made of coconut. On this night my wife and I decided to split a large Shave Ice with lilikoi and coconut flavors. They weren't messing around with the large size as it came in something like 40 - 50 oz styrofoam cup. As soon as I saw it I knew that getting the syrup to the bottom of the cup was going to be a problem. I was also concerned that the lilikoi flavoring was red which I had never seen before, it's been yellow/orange. Both of my concerns ended up being reality as the syrup made it maybe 1/3rd of the way down and the flavoring tasted only of pina colada with none of the expected sharpness from the lilikoi. It was also ridiculously sugary and sweet which can be ok but this was over the top. The only thing that they got right in my book was that the Shave Ice was finely shaved and nice. In the end my wife and I made through about 1/4 of our Ice and threw the rest in the garbage. The bottom line for me is that I probably wouldn't stop by here again in the future. While I am sure that the ice is refreshing on a hot day I didn't care for the syrups nor the fact that it wasn't distributed very well.
