| - I contacted Unique Upholstery recently because I found the seats of my BMW becoming too firm (and uncomfortable for me) over the past few years. The cost to soften the driver and passenger seat (by removing a layer of the existing padding and replacing with softer material), was $300 per seat, and the work was done in under a day as promised.
When I picked up the car, though, I was disappointed in the results. The driver seat was only softened a little, the change to the passenger seat (by my touch) was unchanged. My wife also couldn't detect any difference in softness in the passenger seat. In addition, the passenger seat weight detection was causing the seat belt chime to go off with even a small amount of weight (e.g., an iPad and a water bottle) on the seat.
I brought the car back in and discussed all this with Kevin, who said he would try to do what he could, given that there's a limit to how soft the passenger seat could be made without adversely affecting the passenger detection. I said that fixing the chime was a higher priority than softening the passenger seat, and that if needed the passenger seat could be restored back to its original firmness if that would fix the chime issue.
When I picked up the car again, the driver side seat was much improved. Kevin lowered the front panel, which helped my comfort quite a bit. The passenger seat situation, however, was unchanged. The seat belt chime was still going off with minimal weight in the seat. At that point, Kevin said there was little he could do about fixing the seat belt chime without possibly making the situation worse.
I've been driving the car for about a week now. The seat belt chime issue is still present. At one time, it was going off without no weight on the front seat. I've learned not to put anything with any kind of weight on the passenger seat, as I find it bothersome to have to reach over and buckle the seat belt when I do to turn off the chime.
Overall I'm disappointed with the results. Knowing everything I know now, I would not have spent $600 to achieve these end results. Please note that I have no complaints about the driver's side seat and based on that would give Unique 4 stars. However, re: the passenger side seat, even though he softened that seat as much as he was able, given that I now have a new problem that didn't exist before I brought my car in, I think offering some type of refund for that portion of the work would have been good customer service.
