  • We use the phrase too many choices, which is indicative of the innovation in the USA. So last night I entered the place of too many choices: PopBar. What an amazing array of colors, brightness and variety. Yes, as the name implies, this is a Popsicle (TM) bar, now I realize that that term is really a name of the 1950 brand, but now taken to a whole new level. They make frozen treats or pops, that you eat off of a stick. As to the stick, it is unique, being wider than what we are used to and the stick goes through a slit in a cardboard catch-all so if your treat drips, the catch-all catches it. But the innovation goes further. Arranged by color and type the pops come in regular and unique flavors: vanilla, strawberry, etc. but you find pineapple, blueberry, mango, dulce de leche and more. Ummmm... So choose one. Go by your favorite color or flavor. Go ahead. This is just the start as you chosen pop goes to the dipping station where you can opt for dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate and caramel chocolate. And...do you want the pop dipped completely, or at a diagonal with more chocolate sauce drizzled on it? Dipped and drizzled, or not, the next station is to choose what "topping", really, what crunchy stuff do you want schmushed into the still warm, yielding chocolate dip? And do they schmush a lot on it. Choose from coconut, almonds, sprinkles, pistachios and more than I can remember in my rainbow brain. Ooooo...chocolate dip smothered with chocolate sprinkles. A six-year old form of orgasm. It works for me, also. I did dark chocolate on a blueberry pop with shredded coconut. As this was a Yelp! reception, when we entered we were served a drink called a cappuccino and that is what it tasted like with rich whipped cream floating on two layers of coffee and chocolate liquid. A good way to start out. They have other such concoctions, which opens another door into another room of the place where there are too many choices. So after a cappuccino and a pop, yet another door was opened as I was handed a mango pop immersed in a cup of champagne. That was sooo yummy as the mango pop was disintegrating into the bubbly. Alternate bites of mushy mango with sips of mango tainted champagne. Repeat until fully consumed. They have more, so more options to explore. Quite a unique experience. Popbar was founded by a young couple who had talked of having their own business when they got out of school. They did their research, set up Popbar in the NODA (North of Davidson Avenue) in Charlotte and casually announced that they plan to open more locations in the near future. Lot of confidence, gumption and energy on their part. This particular place of too many choices is open from Noon until around 8 or 9pm. Not a place for breakfast, but who knows? Prices are reasonable for what you can concoct, but certainly more than conventional pops. I wish them great success. These kind of people are the future of America's economy. Enjoy.
