| - This is one of the best kept secrets in Toronto and despite wanting people to come to the place, I sort of hope it stays that way. This is the type of place when people can't decide where to grab a casual bite to eat in the downtown core, I say, "Well, there's always the Strath..."
The Strathcona Hotel is one of the long-standing hotels in the downtown core. Now because of the larger franchises in the area (Hilton, Marriott), it almost seems boutique-y in comparison. I cannot speak to the quality of the hotel, however. It's the pub and restaurant I can attest for.
The Strath is a direct throwback to its early days. You can see from the set-up and décor, this used to be a tavern with metal-topped tables, separate women's entrance (if there was one), and the ability to buy quarts. It has been cleaned up now like a farm-hand in a suit. The metal-tops are gone and the quarts are a rarity, but the spirit still lives on. TVs show the sports, the bartenders serve up beers, and the kitchen puts out decent sports-bar style food.
If I see the place is packed one night, I'll know this review worked.
