| - Hmmmm...what can I say about this place?
Well, I will start of with the positives: the food, of course. The majority of the menu items are incredibly rich and the portion sizes are pretty big, so be careful when ordering. If you like foie gras and dishes like poutine and boudin (blood sausage) then you must try this restaurant. Even if those things are not too your liking, there are several lighter items on the menu. In fact, the tomato tart and marinated herring appetizers were our favorites of the night. Other items we ordered included the happy pork chops, boudin tart, PDC mashed potatoes.
The happy pork chops were two ginormous pork chops. Nothing special or terrible, but compared to the appetizers we ordered, it seemed kind of plain. The boudin tart had the same flakey crust as the tomato tart, but again the serving size is HUGE, so along with the richness of the sausage, it almost became a chore to eat this. The PDC mashed potatoes are just mashed potatoes with lots of cream, butter, and garlic.
All the negatives had to do with the service and décor. The hostess that particular evening was having a bad day I think, she was very brusque. Showing up on time and letting her know of our 9:30 reservation, she gives me a look of contempt, says "ok," and then walks off. We were left outside waiting without any update for about 15 minutes and finally seated about 10:30 pm. Once seated, we had to wait for our waiter who seemed more intent on helping the boisterous patrons at the bar and of course wait for the food, about 45 minutes. What about some bread until our orders arrive? Good question. Well, the bread is fresh baked and of course they ran out and had to make more. So much for planning and execution.
There was a live tank with shellfish, but I couldn't find anything like that on the menu. I guess I didn't give the super secret handshake to get the special menu. Maybe the waiter had mentioned the specials of the day which included a shellfish dish, but I couldn't hear. Which brings me to my biggest gripe: the décor. Concrete walls and floors, hardwood tables, and of course loud house music playing in the background and bouncing off everything. My girlfriend had to shout across our small two person table in order for me to hear her. I guess the restaurant was trying to be modern and hip with the loud music, open kitchen, and unfinished interiors.
So if you can put up with the somewhat rude service, long waits, and hate your sense of hearing, then the food is definitely worth trying.
