| - Square Cafe has been one of my favorite brunch spots for years. I don't live in the area anymore, so last Sunday I was pretty stoked when my friend asked if I wanted to get SC post-workout grub and a latte for the 1.5 hour drive home.
During my visit, I ordered the tandoori jackfruit bowl with two fried eggs, a cinnamon (bun) protein pancake, and the Smokin' Mocha to wash it all down. The bowl was loaded with huge chunks of jackfruit, diced sweet potatoes, sliced mushrooms, and scallions all tossed in smokey tandoori masala spices - which was perfect on it's own, but even better with the runny egg yolk from the two fried eggs I added. The cinnamon protein pancake was the size of the plate, fluffy, and topped with a generous smear of cream cheese glaze. The Smokin' Mocha (chocolate, spiced brown sugar, and cayenne pepper) was sweet and spicy and perfect to sip on while waiting outside on a cold day for a table. I love chili and chocolate together, so I was immediately sold on this before I even tasted it. The portions are always bigger than I remember. Our entire meal was under $40.
The wait for a table on a busy day is always estimated to be 20 minutes, but is never more than 15 (if that). Our service was great, too, of course. No matter how packed the house is each time I've visited, the staff keeps it together and never seems to miss a beat. The friendly fellow who waited on our table was prompt and a pleasure to have as our server.
The menu changes seasonally, so there is always new stuff to try each time I return (I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the lavender, white chocolate, coconut latte they had on the menu a few seasons ago makes a comeback). The atmosphere is pretty laid-back and the service is always good. I never get tired of eating here and appreciate that the menu caters to a lot of dietary preferences.
