I was in Rome recently and took a food tour where it was explained to us that much of Rome's gelato is 'fake', i.e. made with a mix and whipped within an inch of its life. The gelato at La Paloma tasted very much like the fake stuff that was identified for us. Whether the gelato is 'fake' or not at La Paloma, I can't say for sure, but I can say that I was very very disappointed. I sampled 5 flavours (much to the chagrin of the guy behind the counter) and they were all overly sweet, and had an empty whipped chemical taste. Wanting to give the place a chance, I ended up with the mint on a sugar cone. The sugar cone was stale. My mouth was coated with a chemical sweetness. I threw the whole thing out.
Folks, there are some amazing gelato places in Toronto that rival anything I've had in Italy. Notable places include Il Gelatiere at Mount Pleasant and Davisville, and Simply Gelato just south of Eglington on Yonge. I'd recommend passing on this place.
