| - I booked six rooms at Hotel Le Roberval for a friend's bachelor party that I planned in Montreal. This place came recommended from a buddy who was joining us for the weekend.
Hotel Le Roberval is an older hotel with very few amenities; the facilities could be in better shape and the hotel has certainly seen better days. That said, it did the job since we did not spend a good deal of time in the hotel.
We were originally booked for 6 rooms with 2 double beds; upon arrival, we were told that we were upgraded for free to suites. We got into our rooms to discover that the suites had a separate bedroom with 1 bed and a pullout bed in the sofa in our living room. Thankfully, each pair of roommates worked out who would get the bed and it did not cause much conflict -- but this was a bit of a comfort issue.
Some positives:
- Breakfast is served every morning during Summer months from 7-11 AM and is a continental spread with croissants, pastries, bread for the toaster, cereal, and juice
- The hotel offers free Internet (though it does sign you out often, probably to prevent overuse)
- The location is pretty excellent, though it may not look like it on Rene Levesque -- the hotel is just blocks away from Saint Catherine (close to the Gay Village part if you turn right coming from Rene Levesque) and right near the Metro Station Berri-UQAM. The area does have a lot to offer if you walk a few blocks to explore.
- The front desk staff is extremely helpful and speaks fluent English
Some negatives:
- Parking is $15/day in a building that is difficult to locate, on a one-way street, with an extremely steep hill to go up and down. The parking fee is taxed on the bill, as the taxes cover the entire price you paid for your stay.
- The pillows were very lumpy and I found it difficult to sleep on them
- The room only had one garbage can (in the bathroom), no bars of soap (and just a shampoo dispenser in the shower), and no pen or paper
- The temperature in the room was difficult to control, so it was often very muggy and warm; the air conditioner was in the living room, but there was no way to cool down my bedroom except by opening the window, which faced out onto a busy street
- There are actually two elevators to get you to different rooms of the hotel, with no way to go to rooms on the same "floor" without going all the way down to go back up (i.e., 401 and 410 have different elevators). The rooms with higher numbers appear to be part of a newer structure
Overall, the price was fair and the free upgrade was appreciated. The hotel served its purpose in acting as a home base and the staff could not have been more helpful as I checked in the folks for each room.
I wouldn't want to stay here again unless I couldn't find a price elsewhere, as I expect a bit more from a hotel in a major city. This place is in serious need of an overhaul, but it may work for you if you're budget-conscious and need a place to stay that's right off the Metro.
