| - Returned to Spoon last night after a 5-star experience last winter and was unfortunately a bit disappointed.
We sat outside which was very nice. Only a few tables, so it felt private and the weather was perfect. Waters were poured right away, but then no server returned to the table for at least 10 minutes. We had to ask one of the other servers outside if we could please place a drink order. He ran inside and found our server. Who casually greeted us with "thank you for your patience." An apology would have been more appropriate.
Our party of three planned to try the Chef's family style meal, because my husband and I enjoyed it so much last visit. We decided against it this time, after hearing the offering. Each of us started with the Spring Salad. The plating was nothing short of bizarre. The salad was positioned around the rim of the round plate like a crescent moon, leaving the center completely empty. It looked like half of the salad had slid from the plate on the trip from the kitchen--sadly, it was intentional. Apart from the plating, the salad was VERY skimpy and inconsistent for $10. My husband had no wax beans and all three lacked seasoning. Double the portion and plate more sensibly! We also tried the carrot pierogi to start. The pork filling was delicious...no complaints here!
The three of us had varied experiences with the entree course. My husband mostly enjoyed his choice, the burger. Thought it was nicely cooked but said the bun-to-meat ratio was off--too much bread--and the pineapple was take or leave. He really enjoyed the frittes, though! I had the pork belly loin chop, which was the hit of the table. The "rice polenta" schmear underneath was fantastic and the lentils and pork were perfectly cooked. My only complaint was the aggressive ginger note in the "barbecue sauce." My friend's choice, however, was the low point of the entree course. He had the bay scallops with Israeli couscous. It looked like something I would make at home on a busy work night and/or would serve as a SIDE DISH. The flavors were good--I liked the red pepper--but the dish was screaming for another protein like some prawns or sea scallops instead of bay. Just about as bizarre as the salad for me.
Dessert was good! My friend and I each had the flourless chocolate torte. The mocha bark garnish was AMAZING. I could eat a whole plate! I could go without the thick white chocolate ganache piped on top of the torte (I scraped it off), but overall my chocolate craving was satisfied! My husband had the ice creams: vanilla, graham cracker, and mint chip. All good. The vanilla was too icey, but the fresh mint made up!
I raved about my previous experience at Spoon and was deflated by the fact that it was just "so-so" this time. I plan to try again in the colder months when some of the heartier dishes make their return!
