The Toronto Lover system:
5 stars = Must visit!
4 stars = Really good. I take my friends here.
3 stars = Somewhat worth it... if you have nowhere better to go.
2 stars = Below average. Attend only when necessary.
1 star = Do not visit!
The Firkin pubs are pretty impressive. They offer exactly what most people want: seats, beer, fatty foods, and just enough tv and music.
What's disappointing about the Friar & Firkin is that it might have the best possible spot for any type of capitalist venture in Toronto. It's right at Queen & John, steps away from the Paramount, MuchMusic, and a lot of fun on Queen West. Yet, it serves Keith's and Creemore and tasteless burgers and fries just as you would have in any part of Ontario. There's really nothing special here.
It also loses points for me because of the awkward narrow layout. This doesn't affect your time once you're seated and enjoying your time, but it's an eyesore, and it makes the booth seating near the front very uncomfortable for individuals or groups of any kind.
You're at Queen & John... Why would you be at a Firkin unless it offered something more interesting than the great nightlife just outside the door?
