I like this place. On a summer day I like the patio and balcony overlooking the Monongahela with the breeze off the river. I like the cold, sharp, crisp beers. I like the fun, live German bands inside. I even like the Disney-esque German uniforms the waitstaff wears. What I don't like about this place is the food.
I love sauerkraut, with "sauer" being the key part of that word. The kraut here lacks the sauer. The sausages are bland. The chicken dishes are bland. Even the beer cheese is pretty dang bland.
The two best things I've found? The pretzels with mustard (just regular ol' yellow mustard), and the salads, which are big with just the right amount of crunchy iceberg and romaine mixed with just the right amount of flavorful green leaves from other lettuces. I'm not saying they're the best salads around, but they're better than anything else on the menu.
