| - I am not the type of person who seeks out Italian restaurants; I usually gravitate toward other food genres when given the choice. However, Piccolo Forno is one of my favorite restaurants in Lawrenceville, and I highly recommend it!
I've been to Piccolo multiple times, and I am always impressed with the service and the food. The restaurant is beautiful and has a homey Italian feel while still feeling hip. If you're lucky, you'll be seated by one of the large windows at the front. One of the things that I love about Piccolo Forno is the fact that it's BYOB. They do charge an uncorking fee, but it's nice to be able to bring your own bottle (or two!) of wine. Also, If you have a long wait for your table, I recommend going right around the corner to Grapperia for a cocktail. You will not be disappointed.
I honestly think Piccolo Forno has some of the best Italian food I've ever had. My favorite appetizer on the menu is the Torre Di Melanzane. It has layers of eggplant, basil, mozzarella, and other squash; it reminds me of a ratatouille, but even better. For an entrée, I highly recommend both the lasagna and all of the wood fired pizzas. This is not my highest-ranked craft pizza in Pittsburgh (Mercurio's holds that coveted spot), but it runs a close second. All of the pizzas are flavorful, fresh, and authentic. I particularly love the Speck E Marscapone pizza which includes tomatoes, mozzarella, marscapone, and speck (which is a type of cured meat). You really can't choose a bad pizza here, so get a few different ones to try and take home leftovers!
Piccolo Forno is a wonderful place for anything from a date night to a group celebration. Sure, you may not be able to just waltz right in and get a table - but that just goes to show you that the caliber of food at Piccolo is worth waiting for!
