| - This store is a gem and a key part of Cleveland's music scene. It's a labor of love by the owners, who are really into music and work hard to develop and support the music community as well as their neighborhood, the Waterloo Arts District, working hand in hand with their neighbors the Beachland Ballroom, This Way Out and Blue Arrow Records.
This store specializes in indie rock because that's what the owners know and love. It's not Tower Records, it's a small independent store that's well-curated in its niche -- and, unlike Tower Records, it's not defunct. The comments here wishing this store sold other kinds of music are baffling to me -- it's like criticizing a Chinese restaurant for not being a Mexican restaurant. There are several other stores in Cleveland that do a great job with other kinds of music, like My Mind's Eye, Record Den and Blue Arrow. I like them and shop there too. But this is a great place to shop if you like indie rock, on CD and vinyl. Most of the stock is new, but I have also found lots of good stuff in the used bins in the seven years or so I've been shopping there.
The owners are helpful and funny, without any of the classic record store snobbery. I'm a lot older than their core demographic, but from the start they made me feel welcome. They will be happy to special order anything you want. They host in-store performances, listening parties and occasional get-togethers in the store. They occasionally book shows and talk up a lot of local bands. They do a great job using social media and other Internet tools to promote a feeling of community around the store and the other businesses in their neighborhood. Everything they do is always beautifully designed, too. (I love the set of pint glasses I got there with the Music Saves crest...)
So please don't put any stock in the bizarre negative comments found here by people who obviously prefer other kinds of music. Music Saves is a great shop that deserves your support.
