  • Luckily, we came early to San Tan in beautiful downtown Chandler and scored a seat at a table inside just before the start of the Saturday night Elite Eight NCAA tournament games. We spent five hours in the brew pub and still had a good time even though I didn't prefer a good majority of the beer and wasn't impressed with the food that was ordered. Now distributing into Texas, New Mexico, and California, this was the first time I had tasted any San Tan beer. The list is a paradise for the pale ale lover, with half of the regular tapped brews being pale ales along with two wheats, a golden, and an amber interspersed in the mix. We got to sample most of the choices with 4 oz pours of a flight of seven beers. Except for the grapefruit, the flavor notes were all very similar. Although I don't mind the hoppiness of an IPA, I usually can only drink one or two before the flavor becomes overwhelming. I prefer the roasted, malty flavor of a brown ale or stout, which there wasn't much selection of on the list that night. Luckily they did have the Gordo Stout on hand, which was delicious and I stuck with about 5 of those after I finished the flight. As for the food, we ordered the soft pub pretzels which were good but definitely over salted, but wasn't an issue at all as I just scraped off the excess. The margherita pizza was another story. It doesn't have to be textbook Neopolitan (which this pizza was far from) for me with double zero flour, tomatoes from San Marzano, buffalo mozzarella, and cooked in a wood fired 900° oven with a charred and blistered crust. It just has to taste good, and this pizza didn't with the under-cooked, flavorless crust being the biggest downfall along with a lack of a sauce. Our server was great, she had an extensive knowledge of all the beers, and even though she was busy, she made sure we had a beer in front of us at all times. My phone battery was dying fast and she let me use one of the portable house chargers to get a little more juice. The age range of the crowd was pretty wide and we had fun with everyone including the college guys sitting to our left and a couple of middle aged couples to our right all rooting for our respective teams. Our tab for the pretzel, pizza, and all the beer before tip was $75. Would I come to San Tan again? Yes, with the hopes of some darker beers (which I know they brew) on tap and if hungry, would not have the margherita. Would I recommend San Tan to others? Yes, because you'll like the brew pub environment and might absolutely love the beer.
