| - When I first decided to move in to Tartu, I read a lot of mixed reviews (with more leaning to the negative side), but those reviews were slightly outdated so I decided to give the place the benefit of the doubt. Now that I am here, I would like to offer my advice for those who are considering this place. There are several factors involved when deciding to living here:
Pros/Neutral:
1. It as a very convenient location. It's right at the edge of campus and you have easy access to 24hr convenience stores like Metro and G's, the Athletic Center, the Varsity stadium, and others.
2. After the maintenance work on the elevators, they work rather well. I don't ever have a problem getting around the building and I lived on the 17th floor.
3. Internet speed is decent. Not what you would want but definitely better than what you need. Just a heads up, only those in the climate-controlled suite get wifi; the rest, you lot have to stick to ethernet.
Cons:
1. The staff. Damn, it's like they're in a perpetual bad mood. Simple questions/suggestions are met with snark, patrionizing replies. Even the once a month interaction for rental payment is leading me to consider not staying here. Apparently, the conditions for renewing the lease is not covered on their website but merely stated somewhere on the lease renewal form so do read the forms carefully.
2. Smell. I lived in the suite closest to the garbage chute. Every time I walked back to the suite, I just get a whiff of the sweet scent of rotting trash. Lovely.
3. The constant $50 price raise each year. This year the price is at like $800 for the standard suite and $1020 for the climate-controlled one. At this rate, you're probably better off renting a decent apartment place and getting your own furniture and stuff.
4. There are still a bunch of insects in the non-renovated suites. And you'd be surprised (or maybe not?) but the renovated ones also get a couple.
In short, the place really doesn't really have very competitive advantages over other options. Heck, if you stay in the renovated suites and you plan on getting a university meal plan, you're basically paying the same price as living in the university dorms.
