  • Simply put, this is the best place to buy coffee in Toronto. It has been this way for at least the past decade. I remember many years ago in first year university at U of T when my friend took me here. I was blown away by the quality of the coffee. I had no idea coffee could taste that good. At the time, Alan (the owner) was way ahead of the curve, because there were very few places to buy quality coffee such as this. It is impressive to say the least that Moonbean has been able to not only maintain the quality of their coffee, but also they have been able to stand out in a hyper-competitve coffee market such as Toronto. No matter what your preference in roast or flavour, Moonbean has a type of bean which will suit your taste, each with a complex and robust flavour profile. Each coffee on offer has a short blurb about where the coffee came from, the environment in which it is grown, how it is grown, and an accurate description of the flavour profile of the coffee. This comes in quite handy for people who know exactly what they want, and don't want anything else. Moonbean's coffee also easily exceeds the ethical standards of any chain coffee shop, with all of Moonbean's coffee beans being Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance Certified, or both. Alan is very knowledgable when it comes to his craft. I recently bought a French Press, and asked him if there were certain beans that taste better using this brewing method. He proceeded to give me a 10 minute mini-lesson on not only which beans are best suited for this, but also how to brew coffee properly in a French Press (which I had been doing wrong up until this point). I was very impressed. I have recently started following his advice on how to brew French Press coffee, and there is a noticeable improvement in how it tastes. I also recently discovered that Moonbean has a great tea selection. My girlfriend is more of a tea drinker, and we have discovered quite a few great teas at this cafe. Moonbean is a Kensington Market institution, and is by far one of my top 3 favourite business in not only the Market, but in Toronto itself. I love this cafe so much that it was a factor in my decision to move to the area, because I wanted to have this coffee all the time. When buying this coffee in bulk, it is quite a bit cheaper per cup than buying a cup of Starbucks, Second Cup or the like. So do yourself a favour: by yourself a coffee thermos, and make Moonbean your daily brew. You won't regret it.
