| - UP, UP, AND AWAY
The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard is the perfect place to escape the burning days of summer. At the westernmost point of Lee Canyon Road, it is 8,000 feet above sea level and 4,000 feet above the Las Vegas Valley. The elevation causes temperatures to be 20 degrees less and for a landscape of bristlecone and pine trees to thrive. In the summer, I come here to enjoy Spring temperatures.
When I'd hike the Bristlecone Trail, I'd see the scenic chairlift ride carrying people up the mountain. It had been on my bucket list to ride it. Two weeks ago, I got to wipe it off my bucket list when my brother and I rode on the scenic chairlift ride.
To ride the scenic chairlift ride, you pay in the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort. The admission price is $12 for one round trip ride. The scenic chairlift ride is the same ski lift that carries skiers. If being 8,000 feet above sea level isn't enough, the scenic chairlift ride travels 800 feet up Mount Charleston. It falls short of reaching the summit. The neat thing is that you have the option of getting off at the top of the ride to hike the trails and return to the scenic chairlift ride back to the resort. Or you can hike back down.
The scenery is breathtaking as the scenic chairlift travels through a cut between and over pine forests as it travels up Mount Charleston. It transports you in a place where you are closer to the clouds than Las Vegas. It is a place where you are soaring higher than the birds while breathing in clean ponderosa scented air. The most spectacular views are when the scenic chairlift turns around at the top to head the 800 feet back down to the resort.
If you are afraid of heights I discourage you from riding this. It is not the mountain but the distance from the ground to the cable that the scenic chairlift ride is traveling on that is creepy. The only thing separating riders from falling out of the chairlift is a seatbelt. This really creeped me out, especially when the scenic chairlift stopped to let me on and off causing a dipping sensation. Some of the sounds from the wire made me uncomfortable as we traveled up in the sky. What amazed me was seeing parents riding with their children without seatbelts.
With the scenic chairlift ride off my bucket list erased, I will probably return to ride it to the top where I will explore some of the trails that are 8,800 feet above sea level hoping to reach the summit of Mount Charleston. For sure I plan to explore the trails in the vicinity of the Ski and Snowboard Resort.
