  • It was a chilly day for the grand opening of Chill Spot by SasaSweets, but at 40?, it wasn't quite freezing. After warming up by running around the Container Park tree house and playing a few rounds of firefighter and ninja modes on the Neos 360, we stopped here to try out their halo-halo. With the Filipino favorite, Korean patbingsoo, and Chinese baobing all represented, this is practically the International House of Shaved Ice. Other chilly treats on the menu include smoothies, slushes, many delicious flavors of SasaPops, and ice cream or sorbet crafted to order in a KitchenAid mixer with liquid nitrogen. Coffee and hot tea were not available today, but will be served soon. For $5, I received a cup of shaved ice, condensed milk, palm fruit, red coconut jelly, strips of young coconut and some other yellow fruit, red beans, and a sprinkling of rice krispies. Purple yam was an obvious omission, but they told me they're working on ube ice cream to complete the dessert. No flan, though. I enjoyed texture of the ice because it was shaved to a light powder instead of crushed to coarse pieces. The portion looked a lot smaller after mixing, and without ube, it didn't taste like halo-halo. I never figured out what the yellow strips were; with some bites I thought I was eating mango and with others, peach. I think most of the fun of eating halo-halo comes from picking up your spoon and saying, "what the hell is this?" The workers are super friendly, and I can see many tasty treats coming out of this work-in-progress in the near future.
