| - Up until recently the last time I'd been in this immediate vicinity, on the North Shore behind Heinz Field, was about 3 years ago. That October day in 2011 my family and I had toured Heinz Field--very inexpensive and highly recommended, by the way--and explored the nearby "Tribute to Children" and also the County of Allegheny Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. At the time the Southwestern Pennsylvania World War II Memorial didn't exist; it was dedicated in December 2013, and, I must say, is a beautiful contribution to this beautiful area that sees considerable foot traffic.
Husband and I were first introduced to the memorial during a Pedal Power Tours outing in August and then a few weeks later again found ourselves admiring the memorial while walking the North Shore Riverside Trail on the day of the Steelers home season-opener. (Incidentally, I also very much recommend the North Shore Riverside Trail, which is especially fun to walk before a Steelers or Pirates game, with tailgating in full swing.)
The memorial is striking, hard to miss. From visitpittsburgh.com:
"The memorial includes panels of glass and granite that describe the war, the region's role in the conflict, and the sacrifices of local veterans. Visitors will pass a large pole-mounted flag and then enter the heart of the memorial, a unique elliptically-shaped space defined by the panels. The plaques tell the narrative story of the war. The interior is devoted to the local history while the exterior describes the story of the war around the world."
Check it out.
