| - Occasionally I like to remind myself that I'm not a boring adult who chugs coffee and punches buttons on a computer all day. That's how I felt when visiting the Milestone for the first time.
I stumbled upon a show at the Milestone when looking on Creative Loafing for live music. Located in an 'unassuming' converted house on Tuskegee Road, the Milestone seems like the last place for an authentically divey music venue, but wonders never cease. I was asked for an ID by a surprisingly friendly cashier and the love affair with this place started from there. Its cold, covered in graffiti and bumper stickers, and dilapidated but I can assure that this music venue does not have an ounce of production gloss of more established venues in Charlotte. I've rarely been to a music venue in Charlotte without feeling that the scene was concocted, often with light shows and 'vintage' décor. Not so with the Milestone. The 'stage', if you can rightfully call it a stage, is a step up from the floor. The sound system is slightly shot and I do believe there were holes in the floor, but this place did not lack ambience.
I enjoyed 3 hours of ear-splitting punk rock with a much younger and infinitely cooler clientele of the Milestone. Fortunately I came with a hipster friend who lent me some cool points. Most of the bands were not signed and some were clearly novices, but the raw energy of the fans more than compensated for this. If you don't mind cigarette smoke (yep, they allow smoking here), put on your best grunge and/or hipster gear and head to the Milestone for a gritty good time!
