  • Truly an engineering marvel and worth a trip. Many times we hop in the car and take out of town visitors to bask in its sheer magnitude. Once, my family was lucky enough to get a special tour of the interior by one of my Dad's buddies who worked on the initial project. Hiking down to with Daniel S. via the Hacienda Hotel to Railroad Pass trail gave me a whole new perspective. It is always a breathtaking sight, absolutely a must via car or foot. There are restrictions on backpacks that were not being very strictly enforced (I was wearing a Camelbak that clearly was larger than "allowable" size) The day we went was merely three days after the Boston Marathon bombings and I was actually nervous that I "got through" though in talking to some military and law enforcement friends, it was pointed out that like it or not: I was most likely "profiled" as not being a threat. Felt good to see security visible and even on foot moving amongst the crowds. Many folks drive out and listen to the prerecorded historical sound bytes which tell the remarkable story of the engineering feat which accomplished this wonder. There is natural beauty everywhere, in rock formations, plant, aquatic and aviary life to people watching. You can spend more time and walk across the Tillman Memorial Bridge, have great photo ops, or just drink it all in with the eyes. The Mascot Memorial is a touching tribute to the dog who kept the workers company as they toiled away under unfathomable conditions; clearly he meant a great deal to them. There is a Gift Shop and cafeteria style restaurant (with a Dreyer's Ice Cream Parlor) and clean rest rooms are by car park and on Dam as you walk across. Even during the middle of the day during week, it was rather crowded, so heading out earlier than later is a good idea. Also, keep in mind that you are on the Nevada/Arizona border surrounded by rock and cement with little shade: bring water/electrolytes. Worth the Dam trip (sorry :) Yelp 100 Challenge
