  • So, I don't know why I left such a short review last time, but this place definitely deserves more of my attention, because they truly are awesome. Whenever we travel, my husband and I usually make it a point to try and find a good sushi restaurant. The truth is, I no longer want to do that because I am so satisfied with Shimogamo! As funny as that sounds, I know, strange to find sushi of that quality in the desert, but, it's there! First off, this place is ALWAYS busy, if you go on the weekend, you will want to make a reservation for sure. In fact, you usually find a group of Japanese dining in the restaurant (a good sign of authenticity in my book) We've become such regulars, we have developed a nice relationship with the sushi chef and owner. They totally make us things off menu when we ask them too, (we have some favorite Japanese dishes we can find other places, far away, but not here) and they always do, and they make it well! For instance, one time they got in some fresh Sea Robin, we ordered the sashimi and then afterward they went ahead and fried the whole body for us to munch on, so good!!! (something we had seen at a restaurant in Vegas) So, what to try? Uni. if uni is your thing, you'll want to get it here. It's always fresh, and AMAZING....if it's not up to par, they won't serve it. (you don't want to eat runny uni, fyi, but you won't find that here) I never fail to order the Escolar (on the HH menu as well) it comes with a smoked pickled jalapeƱo on top, which at times can be really spicy, but sooooooo gooood....that's always a must for sure. All of their sashimi is fresh and of the highest quality, and Zach, their head Sushi chef, often brings in fun, fancy ingredients to play with every now and then. (we got baluga caviar on top our uni last time! ) Every now and then he'll get some special fish, such as the sea robbin mentioned above, Spanish mackerel (aji)....etc. In fact, it's good to follow their instagram as they often post what specials they have, and what special ingredients came in for the week (@shimogamoaz) Some of our favorite plates from the kitchen: absolutely have to get the truffle amberjack.....it's to die for. And we ALWAYS order the beef tongue, it's so good....be sure to dip it in the lemon juice they bring out with it! As for service, they are a great bunch of people, but be forewarned, sometimes at their busiest times (think weekend evenings) service can lag a little. But, I think they may have recently hired more help, because the last time we went, there was a new waiter and service was spot on the whole night. Bottom Line: You just can't go wrong with Shimo....
