  • Last week, Lisa Dittrich hosted an art exhibit by Ed Maier which was outstanding, by the size of the crowd. We like this gallery which is in the Arts Factory on Charleston. Ed Maier, a local Las Vegas artist, who in the last two years has been experimenting with new media, including watercolors, produced very colorful and intriguing pieces, many of which were enhanced with black light paint. Ed is known for his magical portrayal of the eyes in a face, and this show did not disappoint, as the eyes were stunning. Children were lifted on their parents' shoulders to enjoy the ceiling of paper flowers, also black light dappled, and to find a hidden painting in the ceiling garden. The Arts Factory second floor had a line of visitors who remained to see the up until midnight on the day of the show. Today I met with Ed at the gallery and had my own personal viewing of each painting. The colors are vibrant and unexpected, and the black light enhancements are handled with a gentle touch. I had never seen this type of exhibit in any galleries in Los Angeles, or elsewhere. The room is small, walls are covered in black, and the individual visitor is equipped with a small hand-held black light. As with all of Ed's productions, I am astounded by how many details I can see with each new look at a painting. There are subtle shadings to the facial structure, which fascinated me. These delicate treatments also picked up the light of the viewer, and of course brought the dimensionality of the facial structure to the viewer. Ed's skill with colors is especially highlighted in the painting of a woman with the vertebral structure of her neck visible in white. The liquidity of the eyes is magnificent. One of my personal favorites is a woman looking toward the viewer with an expression of concern, distress, suspicion, or what you want to feel, and the emotion steals your attention quite intensely. The green color accent and geometric formations make this troubled face pop right out into the middle of the room. Another woman's face is exotic, with captivating eyes of golden brown, and the speckling of paint around her head and shoulders brings to my mind a delicate lace shawl of sky blue. While my attention was grabbed by the shawl, I was drawn to absorb the amazement at two conjoined faces with four eyes. Ed begins his art with the very well-drawn human figure and moves to the progression of wild eyes and double exposures. Attached you will see some smaller watercolor works, and larger pieces. Those of us who are involved in the arts community in Las Vegas recognize that there are so many riches here in this little town, and that there are multitudes of new residents who are looking for cultural experiences. The Arts Factory, Random Alchemy, and our local artists are well worth a look every month on First Friday. Lisa Dittrich did us a solid by reaching out of the regular gallery experience with her Randomness at Random Alchemy. If you are not paying attention to the burgeoning arts happenings in the Arts District, you should check it out!!
