Your experience in this airport will highly depend on your terminal. Terminal 1 beats Terminal 3, to put it short.
I've been through the US customs section once. While the lineup is long, I only waited about 30 minutes at the end, though this was at 8:30am. I'm not familiar at when the peak times are, but it seems like it's just before then.
The terminal is large enough that it takes a while to walk for international flights. If you're waiting near the ends of Terminal 1 there are two Tim Hortons-es that are quite decent and do speak both languages.
The entry section for the arrivals is terrible though. You have to walk through an unnecessarily long hallway, then if you're arriving at peak times you'd have to walk back and forth and back and forth through a barrier setup line in order to get to the customs area. It gets annoying at times.
I've had my luggage lost once in the carousel the time I've been here. Needless to say it wasn't a pleasant experience.
Free wi-fi is always good.
