| - I've been doing yoga on and off at home and was wary at doing a class. It may not be competitive but I didn't want to be the only one straining to touch my toes! I was happy that my first experience at the Yoga Sanctuary would be with other self-professed toe-straining Yelpers.
The yoga sanctuary is up 3 flights of stairs in a low-rise building at College and Yonge. Loved the location as it took me around 30 min to get there from home. Once in, the waiting area and change rooms were extremely small. Our Yelp group clogged the waiting area. This made me wonder at the size of the main room. But now I know all space was allocated to the practice: the main room is huge! It's one of those spaces that you dreamt of living in when you were younger & had no concept of property cost. The ceiling is high, the room light and airy and it just felt peaceful.
Our instructor Rosie came around before the class started, asking if we had any injuries or concerns. I appreciated that, being a beginner and newcomer. She got to the front of the class and began. She let us know that she would be walking around the class and that, if need be, we could follow another instuctor for guidance on the poses.
At first the poses were hard to follow as they moved fairly quickly. I'm familiar with sun salutations though and eventually got into the flow after the first one. I did find it hard at times to hear Rosie, due to the rooms acoustics and her gentle, quiet voice. But since I knew some of the poses, it wasn't too bad. I love that they have props on hand as some of the poses I needed a brick or strap to ease into them.
The Savasana was my favourite. It went longer than I'm used to but was incredibly soothing. Rosie came around and relaxed my neck & shoulders and I nearly passed out sleeping! The gentle breeze coming through the window at that time of the evening made me not want to leave.
The only hard part of focusing was the wafting scent of nearby W Burger Bar. Boy was I starving afterwards!
All in all, a great experience at the Sanctuary. The time fits perfectly in my schedule. The location, instructor & beautiful studio will have me going back regularly to work on Ashtanga. Namaste!
