| - I hung out a lot here a few years ago. The pastries were home made, the coffee was consistent, the prices were fair, and the atmosphere was great for studying. The owners were great and treated their employees well, and the family that owned it was amazing.
I have stopped back in pretty recently a few times now that I'm back in school, and I can say with certainty that I will not be making Scribbles my place for coffee-fueled study this time around. The shop changed hands last year and the quality of the place has really taken a downturn. The new owners are really reactionary to criticism and my favorite barista got fired because of an overblown complaint. The once home baked pastries are now really obviously bought in bulk and sold as though they are still made in small batches. The new owners can't pull an espresso shot and don't know about coffee as evidenced by both my verbal interactions with them and their newer menu offerings. And as for the prices, well, I stopped in the other day and paid $2 for a small to-go cup of bitter light roast. Additionally, the once study friendly atmosphere has been replaced by a family friendly one, with kids running around being loud and the dim, soft lights replaced by strong, bright ones. It's atrocious.
Given that many of their blends are now produced by Bent Tree, you're better off going a block up the road and grabbing a cup there - they'll make it better and you'll pay a fair price.
