| - Pugzies seems like it's been around since at least the 50's, so it's surprising that it's only as old as Pac-Man. It's one of those places you'd never think about going into because, well, why would you? But then, you notice on weekdays that their massive parking lot is overflowing with cars, and so naturally you'd want to check out what the deal is.
The deal when you walk inside is...well, I'm not sure exactly. The ambiance is kind of hospital cafeteria meets neighborhood deli meets 50's soda fountain meets Coco's. But somehow it works. It's a really big space inside, surprising since it's only open for 6 hours on weekdays. However, all that space makes it much less claustraphobic (although I came in after the lunch rush, so who knows). There's dining in the outside courtyard, too - and from the looks of it, really popular with all the office folk working nearby.
Sandwiches aren't cheap - at least $6 for a regular, plain turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread - but these guys give you a LOT of good quality turkey on good quality seed wholegrain bread, not one of those sandwiches where all you're eating is bean sprouts in dire hopes of actually tasting the deli meat. A big pickle spear and two York peppermint patties come along with each sandwich, and really, how can you dog a place that gives you York peppermint patties for free? (ok, you paid for those peppermint patties, but that's besides the point).
In any case, Pugzies is definitely work checking out if you work nearby and have had one too many Subways down the street. I wish I worked closer so I could come back more often, but still a great find in the neighborhood.
4 stars.
