| - I was happy to see A Bao Time at the Midtown Plaza Food Truck Friday as I had been wanting to try their truck for a long time. A Bao Time rocks a siiiick, urban and modern truck with graffiti-style Asian lettering decorating the sides. The truck's layout is actually quite ingenious with an open window above the hitch so that customers picking up their order do not get stuck in a traffic jam with customers trying to order. The clever flow is very fengshui!
There is a menu with several different types of steamed buns. Each order comes with two. Since I hadn't tried A Bao Time before I asked for two different flavors and the server was happy to oblige. He recommended the barbecue roasted duck, and he said the sriracha chicken was the most popular so those are the two I chose.
Usually a baozi looks like a regular roll, but it has a pocket of meat inside, but these steamed buns were open--like fat taco-style--which was a creative presentation I hadn't seen before. To my surprise, the sriracha chicken was my favorite...crunchy and a bit spicy, with a yummy slaw. The BBQ roasted duck had some nice flavors, but the duck skin, instead of being crispy and charred, was soggy and slid right off the meat, completely unappetizing. For this reason, I docked a star from A Bao Time's rating. But the buns were soft with the perfect amount of chew.
I will definitely recommend A Bao Time to my friends and fellow Yelpers, but next time I will skip the duck, get the chicken again and try the tempura shrimp!
