| - Your Dollar Store with More is dead (http://www.yelp.com/biz/your-dollar-store-with-more-north-york). The Empress Walk wasn't long without a dollar store, however. Dollarama has moved in, but not in the existing space. They're up on the second floor, in what I think was the fabric store.
The old Your Dollar Store with More was in a very high traffic area (the confluence of the subway and grocery store exits). This Dollarama is up on the second floor where no one really goes, except people who employ jazz hands non-ironically. But, for the bargain hunter in you, that's a good thing. There's nothing more depressing in life than waiting more than five minutes in line at a Dollarama. "Has it come to this?" you ask yourself every minute in line.
Like all Dollaramas, it's the identical mix of $1-$2 items. Apparently Chinese people want more money these days to work in Dickensian factories so there are fewer and fewer cheap plastic crap items on the shelf for $1. I wish there was some variety and competition in the dollar store market. Dollarama seems to have killed off most of the competition with their clean, brightly lit stores, predictable stock, and noticeable lack of Ganesh iconography up at cash level.
Location wise, stop in to load up on snacks before a movie or baby wipes to get rid of that sticky non-Newtonian brown substance you picked up on the Yonge line. Or if you're finding Loblaws is charging way too much for hot dog buns, Dollarama always has perfectly serviceable hot dog buns for a low, low price. Oh, and the raisin buns. Mmm. C'mon, this is no time to cheap out, baby mamas of North York.
