| - I LOVE Toronto. I find it hip, interesting, and altogether nifty. Now I'm sure the charm of different money, different accents, and another language have a lot to play in this affair. I will bet there are folks from Toronto who come to Chicago and wax just as poetic. I sometimes wish I could disengage the "familiarity circuits" in my head and look at my home town with the same eyes I view the far-flung places I fall for.
But I digress.
Bakery Nerds. Yup, that's what these folks are here. Obsessive, Compulsive Bakery Nerds. And that is a good thing.
I grew up in an Eastern European conclave in Suburban Chicago. Top-notch bakeries were almost on every block. I know what the good stuff is.
And here is where you can ABSOLUTELY get some of the "Good Stuff".
The place is more about content than show biz, and there ain't really a lot outside to let you know the wonders contained therein. But ain't that the way of Nerds? They don't give a shit about the wrapper, it's what's inside that counts.
I stepped inside, and there was some throbbing EDM pulsing away. You'd think that in an Artisanal bakeshop you'd hear some String quartets, or maybe a little light jazz. Folk music. But, Mais Non! A closer look at the kids (and yes they all looked breathtakingly young) behind the counter and they were walking/working in rhythm to the beat. Strangely there wasn't a HUGE selection of stuff, but then again it was later in the day when I visited. Bakeries have their salad early, yes.
But what was there looked splendid. Like, drool-worthy splendid.
Here's where I menchen this was to be my total-sum dinner. There is a tale to tell about the 5 places my daft companion and I walked into (and walked out of) prior to our roosting at Bakerbots, but I don't feel like typing THAT much now. Suffice it to say, none of it was my fault.
I swung with a Chocolate Profiterole, a Toronto Butter Tart, and a Café Au Lait.
Yum yum yum. And a thousand times more.
Gotta say, it wasn't cheap. But I don't kick about price when the quality of the goods are commensurate with the tag. The Nerds earned every penny.
There are places like this in Chicago, I'm sure.
I mean, I hope so...
