| - The claims made about the food at this restaurant have likely caused this placed to be rated lowly by people here who were expecting the most incredible dining experience of their lives. Well, this isn't a fancy restaurant, it's not in a nice area, and nobody should ever get the buffet.
If you do go here, don't order items that you have enjoyed at your neighborhood Thai restaurant back home. The best items on the menu here are the ones that you probably have never eaten before. A lot of the things that are staples at Thai restaurants are served at Lotus of Siam, but they are not done with a flourish and they might even be disappointing.
I've eaten at this restaurant about a dozen times, and there have been some mediocre meals and some truly outstanding meals. The charbroiled beef dishes are all excellent, the seafood dishes are consistently great, and some of the curries are interesting and delicious. There are some good dishes on the Northern menu, but there have been some that I haven't enjoyed as much. The first time I went to Lotus of Siam I ordered the crispy rice appetizer, and I have ordered it on every subsequent visit. The flavor of that unusual dish is simply amazing. Also, the coconut ice cream with sticky rice is a perfect end to a spicy Thai meal, and at $4 it isn't too costly, either.
So, if you want to enjoy the food here, don't go for something you've already had elsewhere. Ask the waiter for a recommendation (they have ALWAYS given me good advice), get the crispy rice, a glass of Riesling, and finish up with dessert. Oh, and make a reservation, or you'll be waiting a really long time for a table.
