I have to stop myself from visiting too often or else I'd be broke and out on the streets. I absolutely adore the St. Lawrence Market because this is my one stop shop to restock my fridge and pick up a quick bite. Everything just looks so incredibly fresh, from the cuts of meats dangling from the stalls to the shiny berries sitting out front.
There are two floors to the market, with some amazing bakeries downstairs with the most delicious tarts and red velvet cakes. I am pretty sure the bakeries in the market has single-handedly destroyed any diets I tried to participate in (but the carbs from Pasta Mia probably doesn't help).
There are definitely too many vendors to cover all of them, so a couple of highlights from my many, many trips to the market include:
Buster's Sea Cove: This place has an almost cult-like following for people seeking out the freshest deep fried seafood. The fried calamari is one of my favourite in the city, with the batter coated generously over the squid. This is also my go-to place for a fish sandwich. The lobster roll is hit and miss, as are the grilled calamari (a little on the tough side). Generally, anything deep fried is going to be a definite hit (and who can turn down deep fried seafood).
Chris' Cheesemongers: Best flavoured Havarti for sure. I love the creaminess of a good Havarti cheese and this place has the best I've tasted. They also carry specialty cheeses from all over and the staff is really knowledgeable about their cheeses.
European Delight: A legitimate taste of Ukraine with a very friendly gentleman behind the counter, even on a chaotic Saturday when the queue is insane.
Pasta Mia: The lasagna must be made with a little bit of crack, because it's so very good. Must be the secret sauce.
There are so many other vendors that are amazing at what they offer, so it's just best to check the St. Lawrence Market out yourself. Avoid the weekends unless you're a fan of crowds and the hustle and bustle. Also avoid the tourist traps selling Maple Leaf bears and other "Made in China" trinkets.
