| - Finding Mercurio's was like finding the Holy Grail. As a Pizza Partisan, Za is my lifeblood, my ambrosia, you could say. I'm dealing with some (temporary) dietary restrictions that make healthy/safe pizza consumption very difficult. Thankfully, Mercurios' au naturale Neapolitans are offered with gluten free crust Monday-Wednesday Isaac-friendly and are absolutely delicious.
ZA REVIEW: Pizza is prepped with a fresh and simple tomato sauce, on a traditional or gluten free crust. Then they sprinkle homemade mutz and toppings on the pie before cooking. Upon removal, fresh olive oil (and basil if in the recipe) is applied, the server cuts the pizza in four, and delivers it piping hot your table. The cornicione (crust space) in my gluten free pie was a little too wide for my taste, and the coastline (space of sauce between cheese and crust) was a bit too wide, even for Neopolitan standards. Essentially, my pie could have been formed with more care (check posted photos). Regardless, flavor, quality of ingredients, CSC (crust-cheese-sauce) ratio and freshness were all on par. I give Mercurio's gluten free pizza a 7.3/10 pepperonis. I will return o review when I can eat the standard crust.
My parents and I split two small gelatos: chocolate PB cup and dulche de leche. They were to die for, I had a small amount and it didn't make me sick so hell yeah!
SERVICE REVIEW: Frankly, in terms of service, I was disappointed. I understand the virtue and pride a restaurant holds toward the sanctity of its menu items, but refusing to make substitutions based off of my mom's dietary needs came across as cocky. The customer is always right, and if my mom REALLY wanted some to substitute a heavy meat with basil on her pizza, couldn't they have done so? Furthermore, my pizza came a good 5 minutes before my parents', so there was an undesirable consumption lag. Lastly, they took one of the extra chairs from our table which really doesn't mean much but I had this awkward open space to my left, and what if I my imaginary friend was sitting there?
BOTTOM LINE: Mercurio's is a WONDERFUL neopolitan pizza and gelato destination in Shadyside. Their ingredients are fresh and their pies savory. They are knowledgeable and passionate about their food, which is attests to the strength of their menu, but is also incurs perceivable weakness; lacking to some customers who want and need accommodations to eat. Mercurio's gets 4 stars because of these traits, and for providing me with Italian Pie in my struggling times.
