| - I really don't want to be giving this negative review! The Windsor Arms has been my favourite tea place in Toronto for a few years now -- I love the atmosphere, & it's normally very high quality. A few days ago though my partner & I went for "Twilight Tea", ie tea at 6pm, & it was so awful we ended up sending it back.
The scones were rock hard -- I was able to pick them up & bang them on the table. The cream had a hard, yellowish crust. The desserts had rubbery film over them that I couldn't puncture with a spoon. The mini croissants were also rock hard, the mini sandwiches had that weird crustiness on them that old white bread gets, & the filo pastry on the mini quiches was hard in a chewy way.
Obviously, they had prepared everything that morning then stuck it all in the fridge & then warmed it up when we got there. That's not okay with high tea -- the food is delicate & doesn't survive a day shoved in a fridge. Also, high tea is expensive, because it's about a quality experience. Not to mention that we paid a premium because it's so close to the holidays.
When we complained they were very nice & took the food away & brought us new food, but it was exactly the same.
So obviously I strongly recommend avoiding Twilight Tea. If the food is only prepared once a day, early on, then it's best to make only early reservations.
I may or may not come back at all ... maybe this is a good time to re-explore some of the other tea places in Toronto.
