| - Simply put, it's a favorite "hangout" of mine. I know that sounds ridiculous, but seriously, in Las Vegas, there's few places other than the comfort of one's home where you can just take a deep breath and relax with a book or check out some music or movies.
All with glorious A/C blowing on you!!!! Since 2003 when my family and I first got a house out in Summerlin, the Sahara-West Library has been a treasure trove for me in terms of books, music, and movies. Better than any Barnes and Noble or the former Borders Books and Music ever was! I can't tell you how grateful I've been to the library's selection of DVDs from classic masterpieces and foreign films to hard to find or little-known TV series, I've found them always through Sahara-West, and for FREE!!!! I never tired of telling my finds to my friends and when they'd hear, they'd always respond "You mean, for free?" YES, for FREE! That's what's so great about the library! The amount of items you can take out is amazing! You could essentially get out all seasons of your favorite TV series and make a week out of watching them for FREE without having to pay for a Netflix or Hulu subscription.
Of course, your request for a specific title (I always use the online reservation system for notifications on when my holds arrive!) may take a while depending on the popular demand or how many copies the libraries have ordered (don't expect to get the latest seasons of newer shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game Of Thrones, or House Of Cards within a few days. Requests are shown by how many people have requested the title before you and certain TV series can be borrowed out for two weeks, so if you see that you're number 38 out of 40, you can definitely expect a wait time of anywhere from 3-8 months to receive your copy).
I'm actually volunteering right now at the library and hoping to land a part-time or potential full-time position there in the future.
I've seen the place go through lots of changes in over 10 years, including back when they still had an official 'Check-Out' counter you had to wait in line in, the red envelopes for patron holds, and the movement of the DVDs from upstairs to the downstairs area.
Really, the only problem I've ever had with the library are the screaming kids who come in on a daily basis. But that's just something you can't control in life and really, it's not the library's fault. It's no secret, bringing kids into a large, open spaced building with vaulted ceilings, is a guaranteed invitation for little kids to test their vocal chords.
But no matter what, it still holds up as a nice place to just escape for a while in a nice air conditioned building where you can browse your favorites in books, music, and movies!
