  • One trip + one failed trip. Trip #1: In a bind because my car was stolen while I was in Calgary, I bought a "Greyhound" Bus ticket to get as close to my rural Alberta town as I could get. Trip #1, Problem #1: I bought the ticket online using my mobile phone the day before, to pick up the ticket at the Calgary Greyhound station. Greyhound Canada did not e-mail confirmation of the purchase as promised. When I called customer service, the office was closed. So I did not know if the ticket was purchased or not, or if my credit card was charged or not. It turned out that the purchase did go through, but I could not find out until I got to the station the next day. Trip #1, Problem #2: The "bus" for the trip was not Greyhound, but a small mini-bus contracted by Greyhound. Heat was only in the front, and it got very cold in the back on that -25C day. My toes got cold enough to be in a great deal of pain, then started to go numb with frostbite. At one stop we had 10 minutes, so I and another man went into the gas station, took off our shoes, and warmed up our toes with our hands. Other passengers had more space, so were able to do the same on the bus in their seats. Trip #1, Problem #3: The Greyhound Canada website indicated an address within the town of my destination as the Greyhound "station". Instead, I was dropped off 4 kilometres from the town at gas station. In -25C weather, I had to walk half a kilometre to the crossroads, and hitchhike into the town. Trip #1, Problem #4: When I e-mailed Greyhound Canada about these issues, they did not claim any responsibility, and said I needed to contact their subcontracted carrier. Trip #2: Complete FAIL. I had to go back to Calgary to fetch my car from impound after the Calgary Police recovered it. I bought a "Greyhound" ticket online the day before travel, begged a ride out to the remote gas station, and waited. I was 30 minutes early, to be safe. 10 minutes after the scheduled time, the mini-bus with it's Greyhound trailer drove by on the highway without stopping to pick me up. I immediately phoned Greyhound Canada to tell them what happened, and asked that the driver come back, since it had been less than 5 minutes. "Sorry sir, we have no way to contact the driver. Would you like to have your ticket extended to tomorrow for the next bus?" I had a prepaid hotel room that night I couldn't get a refund on, and the impound fees for my stolen car were increasing everyday. I asked the Greyhound rep to hold on a minute. Luckily, my friend who had driven me the 75 km to this remote "Greyhound" pickup point had waited to make sure I got onto the bus. I asked him, and he agreed, on the spur of the moment, to drive me the 400 km to Calgary. So I asked the Greyhound rep for a refund. I fully agree that this rep had to confirm my identity and how I paid for my ticket in order to issue me a refund. But I've never experienced the grilling I had. I had to provide even more information to get the refund than I did to buy the ticket. Then I was told it would take 10-14 days to issue the refund. They require immediate payment for tickets online and in person, but it takes 2 weeks to issue a refund? It has only been 8 days, so I haven't received the refund yet.
