| - I have been going here since I was 16. Maybe even earlier. Originally they were on the north side of Queen at Bathurst and then moved more west to the south side of Queen Street. Now they are on Ossington but haven't been to their current location.
I have always been impressed with the stuff they've carried the past 3 decades I've been going there. I used to spend more money here and at the Record Peddler on Yonge than any other, and walking in between the two stores existed a handful of other really cool music stores along the way which are all long gone and are now mostly Bubble Tea establishments and cellphone self-appraisal stations. What a culture legacy this city has.
The last few times I have been to Rotate was just to buy tickets. IMO, Rotate and Soundscapes on College are the go-to places for concert tickets. Sometimes one place will run out quicker than the other so either can come in handy at any time of year for any type of concert. Possible that tickets may sell out but sometimes they do get more so you have to stay on it and not give up hope, or call and ask.
Like many previous posts state, there aren't crazy service charges on their tickets, it's completely fair and convenient. Let's face it, Ticketmaster is a real pain in the cunt through and through and nobody wants to deal with those prickly-pirates anyways. The last time I tried to buy tickets from Ticketsheister for a last minute concert decision at Molson Amphitheater, I couldn't find a TM because there wasn't any. The only one I found (the booth thing @ Young & Dumbass Square) was closed at 6pm and another location just had sports events. I found out after the fact that HMV superstore had a TM inside but now that place is gone, so where in the fuck is there a Ticketmaster now? Phone app?? FFS. The world has gone fucking mad. Too stressful. Thanks to Rotate for saving us the bullshittery and providing tickets for a diverse list of bands as well as several ticket suppliers and not just Ticketmastur'd events.
I think there was only a couple of times I did not receive "the look of condescension" because of something in my pile... So heads up, when paying for The Cramps, Venom, Howlin' Wolf, Bad Brains, TSOL, Huey Lewis "SPORTS", and Screamin' Jay Hawkins... you need to know that Huey is going to unleash a shitstorm of snickers and twitchy eyeball-fuckery. Or maybe you are in there and grab Samhain November Coming Fire, Willie Dixon, Mannequin Soundtrack, Hank Williams, and some GG Allin... Well heads up, because that Mannequin Soundtrack needs to go through the POS system quickly and slip into the bag before they realize exactly what in the fuck you are buying otherwise you will be judged immediately and receive the judgmental and condescending eyeball of musical ridicule.
Sometimes you need to get a record or CD past them like it's a pint of Old Harper if you know what I mean.
Beware and watchout because you will indeed be judged. What I'm saying is if you're looking for Glass Tiger I wish you luck because you might be beaten to a pulp in ESP form. The Spoons are safe, but if you need some Laura Brannigan be careful and take precautions. Have a quick exit plan. Don't even count your change, just leave. Go.
Glad these guys are still going strong. The only record stores in the city to survive the past 20 years are the ones who never stopped selling vinyl.
Queen West is a boring shithole now and has been for years. Yonge sucks shit too. Everybody worthy has either moved to other areas or retired their businesses. The stretch has been infiltrated by trendy idiots and soulless businesses with uninteresting services. If you put on special sunglasses you will see that some have ghoulie looking faces and are not even human.
