  • I do event cupcakes on the side as a home business, so I'm always excited to try new cupcakes from around town. After a good year of promising I'd get there, I finally stopped in to A Cookie and a Cupcake to try some of their promising-looking goods. The shop, as most people said, is adorable. The counter girl was nice and the shop was perfectly clean. I bought a half dozen cupcakes: chocolate, vanilla, grasshopper, strawberry, lemon and apple. Cupcakes were generously portioned (tall, really) and suprisingly not topped with the usual half cup of icing that I'm used to seeing on boutique cupcakes. I dug into the vanilla cupcake on my ride home. The buttercream was super smooth. I'm usually a fan of the typical American buttercream, but this screamed Swiss to me. To be completely honest, I was sorely disappointed. It was extremely buttery (as Swiss usually is-- it's bulked by butter rather than a ton of confectioner's sugar) and not sweet enough for me. The butter flavor was a bit offputting for me, personally. The texture, though-- I can't say enough about it. It was marvelous. The cake was moist and dense; unfortunately a little bit lacking in flavor. The inside was stuffed with custard, which sadly was also very boring. Overall, the cupcake wasn't bad, but like another poster said: I just feel like if I'm going to indulge in a probably 400-or-so calorie piece of bakery, I want to be WOWED. I wasn't. The apple cake featured a cinnamon buttercream and apple filling. It was a bit more flavorful, but unfortunately, that super buttery, not-sweet-enough buttercream ruined it for me. Grasshopper, usually my favorite (mint chocolate), also fell flat, although I enjoyed the chocolate cake more than the vanilla. After trying a few bites of those, I kind of gave up and my family dug into the rest. My husband LOVED the cupcakes. He does not have much of a sweet tooth and actually enjoyed the much less-sweet icing. I guess it just depends on one's taste. He actually ate two whole cupcakes (and they're really big) in half an hour. I don't think I'll be heading back anytime soon, unfortunately. In my opinion, Main Street Cupcakes (in Rocky River) and even White Flower (in Beachwood) outshine these cupcakes by far (and the West Side Market's Grandma Frieda's, which is still my absolute fave). But, if you like a smooth, barely sweet icing, you will probably like these. P.S.: I saw the owner post a "buffalo wing" savory cupcake with blue cheese on her Facebook page. I would absolutely be willing to try it if they sold it. While I don't think these are sweet enough for me, I can imagine them in a savory light and it makes my mouth water!
